The Staked Armchair

The staked armchair is inspired by Welsh stick chairs. It was designed by Chris Schwarz in the USA and is featured in his book, The Anarchists Design Book – the extended edition. Chris designed this to be easy to make as well as comfortable. It is made without the need for steam bending. The arm bow is made from three pieces of wood laminated together. It has no turned parts so a lathe is not required. Not having stretchers makes the chair a little more flexible and this works well on slightly uneven floors. There are several features in this chair that depart from traditional chair making. An electric router is used to cut the sharp gutter detail in the seat. He describes using shop-bought dowels to make the seat and these are not tapered. It is certainly an interesting design and its angular form does have a modern style.

This chair is made from ash with the seat and crest being London Plane. It is finished with soap to give it a soft, smooth finish quite unlike other wood finishes.
